Small and Powerful

The XPC's primary competitor is existing desktop PCs. The entire design goal of the XPC was to offer a SFF system with all of the performance, functionality, and features of a typical desktop PC. We feel that the Shuttle XPC has achieved its design goal, and more.

Current desktop PCs simply don't need the expansion room they were originally designed with. When the current PC form factor was established in the mid 90's, multiple hard drives were needed for adequate storage, optical drives were single purpose, and no peripherals were integrated on the motherboard. Today, single hard drives have reached 300GB, DVD combo drives or DVD-RW has become the norm, and motherboards integrate a bewildering array of high quality features. The Shuttle XPC form factor is designed for the needs of modern PC builders.

The current PC market is completely commoditized, meaning no company is offering a significantly different product than any other. This drives vendors to compete on price. Whenever a pricing war erupts, quality is the first to suffer, and the average desktop PC on the market is clear evidence of this. Flimsy cases, noisy fans, and cheap components are the order of the day in the desktop PC market.

The Shuttle XPC breaks this downward spiral of commercialization by placing a high priority on innovation and quality. In order to offer the power of a desktop PC in a form factor 1/5 of the size, numerous technologies need to be developed, such as Shuttle ICE heatpipe, and the new SilentX power supply.
